Tinder's Move To Kubernetes
When I first started at Tinder, outages were happening multiple times per week and we barely averaged two 9's of availability. I led an effort to create a new CI/CD platform at Tinder through which we containerized and redeployed several hundred microservices on Kubernetes. Today we average four 9's of availability. The team and I wrote about it on our Engineering Blog and later spoke at KubeCon 2019 in San Diego.
Optimizing For Performance in CloudFront
This was not just your straightforward CDN migration for static content. Tinder's infrastructure is predominantly in AWS us-east-1 region. With many millions of customers throughout the globe, we had to figure out a way to improve the user experience for them but could not feasibly move the data to multiple regions. The team and I decided to terminate the TLS connection at the edge and take advantage of the reduction in roundtrip latency. This resulted in double digit percentage improvements in performance and an uplift to business metrics in key global markets. I spoke at AWS Re:Invent 2019 about the project.
